The Matrix and Garden State

I realized about a week ago that there are uncanny parallels between these movies.

I think that they both are about changing perspective. In both movies the main male actors are going about their lives when they suddenly have an inspiring event, connected with an attractive female. In both movies, the protagonists end up seeing their lives differently after a series of evoking events. The antagonists are also largely conceptual.

What is more, there are some serious similarities between the characters which Keanu and Zach typically play. Still, less, but existent similarities between Natalie Portman and Carrie-Anne Moss (Trinity).

Eh. It's a bit of a stretch. Most of the Matrix to me seems to be taken vaguely out of Taoist philosophy (What Zen Buddhism was in China before the teachings of the Buddha became integrated), i.e., Tao Te Ching opens with "the way that can be spoken of is not the constant way".

Garden State, to me, looks a lot like the first half of Albert Camus' book, The Stranger, which opens with a character who doesn't care about his mother's death and bluntly states the facts that surround him. It's about gaining responsibility. It's just over 120 pages and takes maybe 2 and half hours to read. It's worth it.
