Renting this I had no idea what to expect. I had heard that it was really bad and to stay away. This advice made me want to see the movie even more. Now I had to see it only to make the comparison about my movie watching standards, to see if they were to low.
Ill let you make the choice for yourself about it
If you watch movies to be entertained, See Cloverfield
If you enjoy special effects see cloverfield
If you like action/horror, see cloverfield
If you like improv acting, see cloverfield
If you expect a movie to have a soundtrack Don't see Cloverfield
If you are a tough sell when it comes to good acting- don't see cloverfield
If you expect movies to be satisfying Dont See Cloverfield
If you like funny movies, Don't see Cloverfield
If you like breathtaking Lord of the Rings Style Visuals, Dont see it
I think the movie was overthought. I think the idea was to give it a 'real' feel, leading to a lot of improv and home-video ish footage. The problem is that this neither makes for an increbily entertaining movie, nor is it what we expect when we watch a film. We have a certain expectation about how people SHOULD act when they are in movies, and I felt that the acting wasn't bad but more, unexpected.

I personally did not enjoy Cloverfield - as you point out, I expect movies to be satisfying and I expect to have good acting :)
Nice analysis.
